OpenAI to Retire GPT-5.2 and GPT-5.3-Codex from ChatGPT Logins on June 2nd

OpenAI has announced the upcoming retirement of its GPT-5.2 and GPT-5.3-Codex models from the ChatGPT platform for users logged in with a ChatGPT account, effective June 2, 2026. This decision, communicated by Thibault Sottiaux, OpenAI's engineering lead for Codex, is primarily driven by the need to simplify compute fleet management. Following the deprecation, GPT-5.5 will become the default frontier model for free-plan users. While the older models will no longer be available through the ChatGPT web interface, OpenAI has confirmed that both GPT-5.2 and GPT-5.3-Codex will continue to be accessible via the OpenAI API. This ensures that developers who have integrated these models into their existing workflows and applications will not experience immediate disruption. The rapid retirement of these models underscores the accelerated development cycle within the AI industry. GPT-5.2, for instance, was launched in December 2025 and is being phased out approximately six months later, indicating how quickly new versions are displacing their predecessors. Sottiaux noted that GPT-5.2 currently accounts for less than 1% of production usage, making the case for its continued presence in the web interface unsustainable due to overhead costs. This strategic shift allows OpenAI to concentrate resources on improving its flagship models and streamlining its offerings, while still providing API access for specialized use cases. The company had previously undertaken a similar retirement of earlier GPT-5 models from Codex in April, signaling a clear direction towards a more consolidated and efficient model ecosystem.
