Equinix Trials Landmark Hydrogen Power Solution at Dublin Data Centre

Equinix, a global leader in digital infrastructure, has launched a significant pilot project at its DB3 data center in Blanchardstown, Dublin, to explore the potential of hydrogen as a primary backup power solution. This trial, conducted in partnership with Ireland's state-owned electricity company ESB and clean energy firm GeoPura, marks the first deployment of a hydrogen power unit for critical data center systems in Ireland and a first of its kind across Equinix's extensive global footprint. The 12-week pilot involves two hydrogen-powered generators, developed by GeoPura and supplied with green hydrogen from renewable sources. These units, which are the size of shipping containers, are currently being utilized to power the cooling systems within the DB3 facility. The technology employs advanced PEM fuel cells to produce clean, silent energy with zero direct onsite emissions, generating only water and heat as byproducts. This offers a compelling alternative to conventional diesel or gas generators, which are significant contributors to carbon emissions. The initiative is particularly timely given the ongoing challenges faced by Ireland's energy infrastructure, especially in the Dublin metropolitan area, where grid capacity constraints are struggling to keep pace with the rapid growth of digital infrastructure. Data centers are known for their substantial energy consumption, and this trial seeks to demonstrate how hydrogen can help alleviate pressure on the national grid while ensuring reliable power supply for critical operations. Beyond providing backup power, the hydrogen units, integrated with uninterruptible power supply (UPS) capabilities, can respond instantly to fluctuations in grid capacity, delivering up to half a megawatt of continuous power. This flexibility allows data centers to potentially act as more dynamic energy assets, contributing to grid stability. Equinix and ESB anticipate gathering valuable data insights from this project, focusing on carbon reduction potential, operational efficiency, safety, and commercial viability. These insights could inform policymakers and universities on optimal deployment strategies for hydrogen technologies in Ireland and potentially beyond, extending to other sectors traditionally reliant on fossil fuel generators.
