Microsoft Unveils Azure Linux 4.0, a Fedora-Based Distribution for Cloud and WSL
Microsoft has officially launched Azure Linux 4.0, marking a pivotal moment in its commitment to open-source technologies and cloud computing. Unveiled at the Open Source Summit North America 2026, this new Linux distribution is free, open-source, and built upon the Fedora project, utilizing RPM packages. Its primary design goal is optimization for Microsoft's Azure cloud infrastructure, ensuring seamless integration and performance for cloud workloads.
Previously, Microsoft's open-source Linux efforts, such as CBL-Mariner (now Azure Linux), were largely confined to specific services like Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS). However, Azure Linux 4.0 breaks these boundaries, transforming into a versatile cloud distribution capable of running a broader range of applications and services. This strategic shift addresses the growing demand for flexible and powerful Linux environments within the Azure ecosystem.
A notable feature of Azure Linux 4.0 is its forthcoming support for Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). This integration will enable developers and users to run Azure Linux 4.0 directly on Windows 11, providing a powerful development and testing environment locally. The announcement by Brendan Burns, Corporate Vice President and co-founder of Kubernetes, also highlighted the general availability of Azure Container Linux. This offering is an immutable, container-optimized operating system derived from the Flatcar project, further solidifying Microsoft's stance on providing robust solutions for containerized workloads. The company noted that two-thirds of Azure customers' computing cores currently run Linux machines, emphasizing the strategic importance of these new Linux distributions.
