GitHub Copilot Individual Plans Undergo Significant Changes, Including Paused Sign-ups and Stricter Limits

GitHub has announced a series of significant modifications to its individual GitHub Copilot subscription plans, impacting new and existing users alike. A primary change is the temporary suspension of new sign-ups for GitHub Copilot Pro, Pro+, and Student plans. This pause is intended to allow GitHub to more effectively serve its current customer base. Existing users will also experience tighter usage limits across all individual plans. For those on the Pro plan who require higher usage, an upgrade path to the Pro+ plan is available, which offers over five times the limits of the standard Pro plan. To enhance transparency, usage limits are now displayed directly within VS Code and the Copilot CLI, helping developers monitor their consumption and avoid unexpected interruptions. In terms of model availability, the advanced Opus models, specifically versions 4.5 and 4.6, are no longer accessible to users on the Pro plan. Opus 4.7 will continue to be an exclusive feature of the more premium Pro+ plan. These shifts are attributed to the increased compute demands generated by agentic workflows within Copilot, which have fundamentally altered resource consumption patterns. GitHub acknowledges that these changes may be disruptive for some users but emphasizes their necessity to maintain service reliability and a consistent experience for its growing user base. The company has also provided information regarding refunds for users who find these new terms unworkable and wish to cancel their subscriptions.
