Webinar Recap: DNS Insights in the NS1 Connect Portal
The IBM Community recently held a webinar to unveil DNS Insights, a significant new DNS observability capability now integrated directly into the NS1 Connect portal. This new feature is designed to empower organizations with a deeper understanding of their DNS traffic, facilitating the rapid detection of anomalies and streamlining the troubleshooting process. A key takeaway from the webinar was the emphasis on DNS as a primary indicator of operational issues. Whether it's an application misconfiguration, an unexpected surge in traffic, or unusual query patterns, DNS data can provide crucial signals that help teams pinpoint and resolve problems more efficiently.
The webinar demonstrated how DNS Insights offers comprehensive visibility into DNS activity through a dedicated portal-native dashboard. This dashboard presents critical metrics such as traffic trends, query volumes, NXDOMAIN activity, and geographic traffic distribution. It also provides resolver information and anomaly detection metrics, giving users a holistic view of their DNS infrastructure's health and performance.
For organizations that have already invested in robust observability solutions, DNS Insights offers seamless integration capabilities. It can connect with platforms like Prometheus and those compatible with OpenTelemetry, allowing users the flexibility to either utilize the NS1 Connect portal's native features or channel DNS data into their existing monitoring stacks. This hybrid approach ensures that teams can maintain their preferred workflows while benefiting from specialized DNS observability.
The session also delved into various real-world use cases. These included detecting application misconfigurations through an increase in NXDOMAIN responses, identifying unusual traffic patterns that could indicate security concerns, and accelerating root cause analysis during incidents. Furthermore, DNS Insights helps in reducing unnecessary DNS traffic and improving overall efficiency. Feedback from attendees indicated a strong interest in integrating DNS data into existing observability platforms, with many identifying unusual traffic patterns and anomalies as their biggest DNS visibility challenge.
