Amazon Aurora MySQL 8.4 is now Generally Available

Amazon Web Services has officially announced the general availability of Amazon Aurora MySQL 8.4, a significant update that brings compatibility with community MySQL 8.4.7 to its managed database service. This release marks a pivotal moment for Aurora MySQL users, introducing a new, simplified versioning approach that directly aligns with community MySQL Long Term Support (LTS) releases. This streamlined model aims to make it easier for customers to adopt the latest MySQL innovations while benefiting from Aurora's renowned performance, availability, and managed service advantages. The update incorporates a comprehensive set of enhancements from community MySQL 8.4, including stronger security defaults, the latest authentication standards, and refreshed InnoDB defaults. These improvements are delivered within Aurora's distributed storage, high availability, Aurora Global Database, RDS Blue/Green Deployments, and serverless capabilities. A key aspect of this release is the introduction of a new patch version experience. AWS will now manage patches, ensuring that any new instance added to an existing cluster or any new secondary Region in a Global Database cluster will use the same patch version as the existing writer or primary Region. This consistency simplifies operations, as customers no longer need to manually track individual patches or re-certify every update, relying instead on Aurora's automatic minor version upgrade capability. Customers can adopt Aurora MySQL 8.4 through various flexible upgrade and migration paths, including Amazon RDS Blue/Green Deployments, in-place major version upgrades, snapshot restores, AWS Database Migration Service (DMS), and Percona XtraBackup. This flexibility allows organizations to choose the adoption method that best suits their workload requirements, downtime tolerance, and existing database topologies. The service is available in all AWS Regions where Amazon Aurora MySQL-Compatible Edition is supported, and users can get started via the AWS Management Console, AWS CLI, or Amazon RDS API.
