GitHub Copilot Rolls Out BYOK, Enhanced CLI, and Streamlined Student Plans

GitHub Copilot has recently rolled out a series of substantial updates, significantly expanding its capabilities and refining the user experience across its ecosystem. A standout feature is the introduction of "Bring Your Own Key" (BYOK) support within the GitHub Copilot app. This new functionality empowers users to connect their own model providers, such as OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, or Anthropic, directly to Copilot. Developers can now select specific models for individual sessions, maintaining control over their AI resources and keeping API keys securely stored in their local operating system's keychain. This move offers greater flexibility and integration possibilities for teams with existing AI model subscriptions or specific compliance requirements. Another major enhancement is the general availability of the redesigned terminal interface for the GitHub Copilot CLI. This updated command-line experience features a more intuitive tabbed layout, streamlining how developers interact with GitHub directly from their terminal. The CLI is evolving into a powerful agentic tool, enabling users to execute complex workflows and manage their development tasks more efficiently without needing to switch contexts. This redesign aims to boost productivity for developers who prefer a command-line-centric workflow. For students and users on the Free plan, GitHub Copilot has simplified its model selection process. These plans will now default to an "auto model selection" experience, which dynamically chooses the most suitable model for each task. While this change aims to streamline usage, it also means that some premium models, such as GPT-5.3-Codex, GPT-5.4, and Claude Opus/Sonnet, will no longer be available for manual self-selection. However, users can still access a powerful array of models from various providers, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, through the intelligent auto-selection system. This adjustment is intended to ensure Copilot remains free and accessible to a wider student audience globally. Further updates include new features for JetBrains IDEs, such as support for organization and enterprise agents, improved message queuing and steering in Copilot CLI sessions, and an expanded agent debug logs summary view. Claude has also been introduced as a preview agent provider within JetBrains IDEs, broadening the choice of AI models available to developers. Copilot code review capabilities have also seen improvements, now supporting repository-level `AGENTS.md` files and offering a more straightforward way to request reviews on draft pull requests. Lastly, GitHub has announced the upcoming deprecation of Opus 4.6 (fast) across all Copilot experiences by June 29th, 2026, indicating a continuous evolution of the underlying AI models.
