NLnet Labs restricts LLM-generated contributions to projects

NLnet Labs, a prominent organization in the open-source community, has announced a revised policy regarding the integration of large language models (LLMs) into its project contributions. The updated guidelines, which took effect on June 26, 2026, introduce stringent rules aimed at ensuring human authorship and accountability for all submitted content. Under the new policy, NLnet Labs explicitly states that all code and documentation contributions must originate from human authors. Furthermore, contributors are now required to openly disclose any instances where LLMs have been utilized in the creation of their submissions, including when opening issues, filing vulnerability reports, or engaging in discussions on community forums. This emphasis on transparency is a direct response to the increasing prevalence of AI-generated content and the challenges it poses to verifying authenticity and intellectual property. While the policy primarily focuses on human authorship, it does provide limited exceptions. For example, LLM-suggested fixes can be included within vulnerability or bug reports, provided they are clearly identified. Similarly, LLMs may be employed for tasks such as linting, code analysis, or review, as long as the human contributor thoroughly verifies the output and assumes full responsibility for its accuracy and integrity. Non-compliant submissions, which fail to adhere to these new regulations, risk being closed or deleted without prior notice, underscoring the seriousness with which NLnet Labs views these restrictions. This development at NLnet Labs is indicative of a broader industry trend. As LLMs become more sophisticated and widely adopted, many infrastructure projects are grappling with the need to establish robust frameworks for managing AI-assisted contributions. The core concerns revolve around maintaining code quality, ensuring legal compliance, and preserving the integrity of human-led development. By implementing such a policy, NLnet Labs aims to safeguard the reliability and trustworthiness of its open-source projects in an evolving technological landscape.
