Modal Secures $355M in Series C Funding for AI-Native Serverless Platform
Modal, a leading developer in the AI-native cloud computing space, announced today a substantial Series C funding round, bringing in $355 million and elevating its post-money valuation to an impressive $4.65 billion. The funding initiative was led by prominent venture capital firms General Catalyst and Redpoint, with new investors such as Menlo, Bain Capital Ventures, and Accel also contributing to the round, alongside continued support from existing major backers.
The company, co-founded by Erik Bernhardsson and Akshat Bubna, is headquartered in New York City and has rapidly gained traction with its innovative serverless container platform. This platform is specifically engineered to handle the demanding requirements of complex artificial intelligence workloads. The newly acquired funds are earmarked for several strategic growth initiatives, including the expansion of Modal's low-latency inference primitives, which are crucial for real-time AI applications. Furthermore, the investment will be used to streamline reinforcement learning (RL) training loops, scale its parallel sandbox infrastructure, and significantly expand its developer team across its offices in New York, San Francisco, and Stockholm.
Modal's core technological strength lies in its unique architecture, which incorporates custom-built storage layers and advanced GPU container snapshotting. These features are instrumental in drastically reducing machine cold starts, a common challenge in serverless and containerized environments, particularly for resource-intensive tasks. This allows developers to seamlessly scale their operations from zero to thousands of GPUs within seconds, catering to a wide array of AI-driven applications such as automated batch jobs, intricate model fine-tuning, and real-time inference.
The technology startup has demonstrated remarkable growth, surpassing $300 million in annualized revenue following a fivefold surge. Its platform is currently powering over 1 billion isolated container sandboxes for a diverse client base that includes digital leaders and AI research labs like DoorDash, Cognition, Decagon, Suno, Physical Intelligence, and Chai Discovery. This strong market adoption underscores the platform's effectiveness and its critical role in enabling advanced AI development and deployment.
