Direct AWS–Azure Interconnect Eliminates Colocation Friction in Multi-Cloud Architectures
Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure have announced public preview availability for direct, cloud-to-cloud private connectivity through AWS Interconnect – multicloud and Azure Multicloud Interconnect. The collaboration provides on-demand, high-speed, private networking between the two largest hyperscalers, completing AWS's multicloud interconnect support across Google Cloud, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, and Azure. The managed integration eliminates manual BGP cross-connect configurations and colocated hardware setups by embedding point-to-point private links with native MACsec security and four-nines availability targets directly into both cloud control planes.
Cross-cloud network engineering has long been the primary friction point for multi-cloud platform adoption. Historically, bridging VPCs in AWS to VNets in Azure required organizations to contract, configure, and maintain intermediary colocation fabrics or on-premises routing hubs. This physical dependency introduced multi-week lead times, fragmented support tiers, and brittle routing overhead. By moving inter-cloud peering to fully managed, cloud-native control planes, enterprise networking teams can provision and tear down multi-gigabit pipelines on demand through standard APIs or Infrastructure as Code, substantially shortening time-to-deployment for cross-cloud services.
This partnership reflects the maturation of multi-cloud architectures from accidental fragmentation into intentional infrastructure topology. Hyperscalers initially treated cross-cloud connectivity with resistance, relying on steep data egress fees and isolated ecosystems. However, enterprise customer demands—accelerated by AI pipelines requiring specialized models in Azure and compute scale in AWS, as well as database workloads running across OCI and GCP—have forced providers to standardize interconnect protocols. Following AWS's earlier inter-cloud rollouts with GCP and OCI, integrating Azure solidifies native hyperscaler cross-connects as the standard architectural pattern, pushing third-party colocation to niche legacy setups.
For cloud architects and DevOps leads, this development warrants an immediate audit of existing hybrid and multi-cloud network topologies. Teams maintaining dedicated colocation circuits primarily for AWS-to-Azure transit should model the operational and financial viability of replacing custom gateway hardware with managed interconnects. Furthermore, practitioners must reassess security postures: while MACsec encryption simplifies compliance across the wire, IAM boundary definitions, cross-cloud DNS resolution, and end-to-end telemetry still require unified orchestration. Platform engineers should also evaluate flat-rate versus variable data transfer pricing models to ensure high-throughput analytical and AI training jobs remain cost-effective.
