Ericsson Embraces GitOps for Autonomous 5G Core Network Management, Signaling Industry Shift

Ericsson has announced the integration of GitOps-based, declarative lifecycle and configuration management into its cloud-native core networks. This initiative is a key component of Ericsson's Intelligent Core offering, designed to lay the groundwork for AI-driven, intent-based, and autonomous network operations at scale within CSP environments. Early deployments with Swisscom have already demonstrated substantial improvements, including 60% faster upgrades and 97% faster service setup. This development is critical because it extends the proven benefits of GitOps—version control, auditability, and automated reconciliation—to the highly complex and mission-critical domain of telecommunications infrastructure. For DevOps and cloud engineers, this signifies a maturing of GitOps as an operational model capable of handling enterprise-grade, real-time systems. It directly impacts CSPs by providing a standardized, more efficient way to manage their 5G core, reducing manual errors and accelerating the introduction of new services. The shift from procedure-driven to declarative workflows is a fundamental change that enables greater automation and reliability. This move by Ericsson aligns with the broader industry trend of adopting GitOps beyond its initial Kubernetes-centric use cases. GitOps is increasingly being recognized as a foundational practice for managing any declarative system, from cloud infrastructure to application deployments and now, critical network functions. The principles of declarative configuration, versioned state, automatic pull, and continuous reconciliation, formalized by OpenGitOps, are proving universally applicable for maintaining desired states across diverse environments. The integration of AI-driven insights with intent-based, closed-loop operations further positions GitOps as a key enabler for the next generation of autonomous systems, where human intervention is minimized, and systems self-heal and optimize based on declared intent. In practice, this means that CSPs leveraging Ericsson's core network solutions will be able to manage their network configurations and software lifecycles with the same rigor and automation typically applied to application code. This will necessitate a deeper understanding of GitOps workflows, including pull request-based changes, automated testing of infrastructure configurations, and robust Git repository management. Practitioners should prepare for increased demand for skills in declarative infrastructure tools and GitOps platforms, as this trend will likely accelerate the adoption of similar practices across other network vendors and critical infrastructure providers. The trade-off involves an initial investment in re-tooling and upskilling, but the long-term benefits of reduced operational costs, increased agility, and enhanced reliability are substantial.
