AWS Interconnect Now Offers Direct, Egress-Free Connectivity to Google Cloud
Amazon Web Services has officially rolled out its Interconnect multicloud offering, providing a robust solution for enterprises seeking seamless, high-performance connectivity between their AWS and Google Cloud environments. The service, which achieved general availability on April 14, 2026, establishes direct, private Layer 3 connections that link Amazon Virtual Private Clouds (VPCs) with Google Cloud VPCs. This dedicated connection leverages the extensive AWS global backbone, ensuring that data traffic remains off the public internet, thereby enhancing security and reducing latency.
A significant advantage of this new offering is its simplified pricing structure. AWS Interconnect eliminates the traditional per-gigabyte data transfer charges, a common pain point for multi-cloud deployments. Instead, customers will pay a flat fee based on the reserved bandwidth tier, allowing for predictable costs regardless of data volume. For instance, a 10 Gbps Tier 1 connection is priced at $12.33 per hour. This model is expected to substantially lower operational expenses for organizations with substantial data exchange requirements across cloud providers.
The strategic move by AWS also signals broader multi-cloud ambitions. Azure and Oracle Cloud have been identified as the next major cloud providers to be integrated into the AWS Interconnect ecosystem, promising even more comprehensive cross-cloud connectivity in the near future. This expansion will further empower enterprises to build resilient, distributed applications and disaster recovery strategies across multiple leading cloud platforms.
To facilitate adoption and testing, AWS is offering one free 500 Mbps local interconnect per region starting May 2026. Additionally, AWS has published the Connection Coordinator API Specification on GitHub, inviting other cloud providers and regional partners to integrate, fostering a more open and interconnected cloud landscape. This initiative underscores AWS's commitment to supporting complex enterprise architectures and simplifying multi-cloud operations.
