Cambridge Warns AI Could Empower Criminals and Hostile States

The report specifically highlights how frontier AI models could empower criminals, terrorists, and hostile states by making sophisticated cyberattacks cheaper, faster, and more accessible. Key risks identified include the automation of software flaw discovery, the generation of highly convincing multilingual phishing campaigns, and the creation of malicious code. Furthermore, the proliferation of synthetic media, such as AI-generated images, videos, and voices, presents a significant danger for widespread disinformation campaigns, capable of manipulating public opinion and spreading false narratives at an unprecedented scale, outpacing traditional fact-checking efforts.
