GitHub Copilot Introduces New Usage-Based Billing Model with AI Credits

GitHub has announced a significant overhaul of its billing model for GitHub Copilot, transitioning to a usage-based system that will take effect on June 1, 2026. This update is designed to align pricing more closely with how organizations are actually utilizing AI-powered coding assistance today, acknowledging the evolution of Copilot from a basic assistant to a platform supporting more complex, agentic workflows. The core of this new model is the introduction of "GitHub AI Credits." Under this system, organizations will receive a monthly allotment of these credits, which are allocated per Copilot seat (Business or Enterprise) and then pooled across the entire organization. For instance, a Copilot Business seat will come with 1,900 AI credits, while an Enterprise seat will include 3,900 credits. This pooling mechanism is intended to provide flexibility, allowing more active users to draw from a shared pool without individual limits. GitHub explains that the previous billing approach treated all Copilot activity uniformly, despite the reality that a quick chat prompt and an extensive autonomous coding session demand vastly different computational resources. The new credit-based system aims to address this by billing users based on their actual consumption. If an organization uses fewer credits, their costs will be lower, while those with higher usage will have the freedom to operate without being restricted by feature gates. Organizations will have the ability to preview their projected bills directly within GitHub before the June 1st transition, providing greater visibility into potential costs. Importantly, unused credits will not roll over to the next month. The decision to allow additional usage beyond the pooled credits, at published rates, will be up to the organization. This change also seeks to ensure the long-term sustainability and reliability of the Copilot platform by creating a more equitable and usage-reflective pricing structure.
