Such costs are inevitably passed down to both existing and new utility customers, prompting state officials to consider how large consumers, like data centers, can contribute their fair share. However, the report also presents a more optimistic alternative. By accelerating the adoption of clean energy technologies, including solar, wind, energy storage, and demand response systems, the U.S. could significantly mitigate these rising costs. This clean energy approach is projected to reduce the overall expenses for meeting load growth by $5.1 billion annually by 2030, representing a 17% saving compared to a fossil fuel-heavy strategy. In scenarios involving fuel price spikes, these savings could even climb to $13.5 billion per year. Beyond cost savings, transitioning to clean energy offers the added benefit of a more resilient power grid, capable of reliably meeting demand even under challenging weather conditions. This ensures continued power supply for critical infrastructure, including the expanding AI sector, at a lower overall cost.
