AWS Transform Streamlines VMware Block Storage Migrations Directly to FSx for NetApp ONTAP

AWS has expanded AWS Transform to support Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP as a general-availability storage target for block storage workloads. The capability leverages guest-level replication agents to migrate block data directly into FSx for ONTAP iSCSI volumes as part of an integrated migration wave that concurrently handles compute and networking configurations. This update introduces non-disruptive pre-cutover testing using NetApp FlexClone technology, PrivateLink-backed volume management, and built-in rollback capabilities that preserve replication state without requiring full data re-baselining. Migrating virtualized infrastructure to the public cloud has historically forced enterprise storage engineers into an uncomfortable trade-off between migration speed and operational parity. When lifting VMware workloads to standard cloud block devices such as basic Amazon EBS volumes, organizations frequently lose critical array-level features—including storage-level instantaneous snapshots, thin provisioning, inline deduplication, compression, and granular failover mechanisms. By delivering a single, automated migration path directly into FSx for NetApp ONTAP, AWS eliminates the need for intermediate staging layers and disruptive secondary cutovers, enabling infrastructure teams to maintain their proven storage management playbooks from day one. This enhancement reflects a wider industry trend toward deeply integrated hybrid storage services and automated, AI-assisted migration workflows. As shifting virtualization licensing costs and enterprise datacenter consolidation accelerate transitions to hyperscale environments, cloud providers are racing to lower modernization friction. Rather than forcing teams to immediately refactor architectures, providers are delivering managed instances of enterprise-proven storage systems that bridge legacy SAN and NAS protocols with cloud-native control planes, ensuring business continuity while reducing operational disruption. In practice, this integration gives platform engineering and migration teams much greater predictability during large-scale cutovers. Teams can perform thorough validation against ephemeral clones while continuous background data replication proceeds uninterrupted, dramatically shrinking cutover maintenance windows. However, architects must evaluate the total cost of ownership: while FSx for ONTAP delivers significant storage savings through deduplication and multi-AZ high availability, it introduces dedicated file system minimums that may exceed the cost of standard block storage for smaller, isolated workloads. Storage engineers should profile IOPS requirements and capacity reduction ratios beforehand to maximize cost-efficiency.
