KT Unveils 'Future Network Security' Vision for Quantum Computing Era

South Korean telecommunications giant KT has announced its forward-thinking "E2E Quantum Security" vision, designed to fortify network defenses against the emerging challenges presented by artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing. This strategic initiative was formally introduced during a special session at the Korea Information and Communications Society Summer Conference, held in Jeju from June 17th to 19th. Jung Je-min, Senior Vice President of KT's Network AI Research, highlighted the rapid advancements in cyberattack methodologies, noting that AI is increasingly being leveraged to automate vulnerability detection and accelerate attack execution. This development underscores the growing limitations of traditional security systems, which struggle to keep pace with AI-driven threats. Furthermore, Jung addressed the significant long-term threat posed by quantum computing. The advent of high-performance quantum computers has the potential to compromise widely used public key cryptography systems, which are foundational to current digital security. These systems rely on the difficulty of certain mathematical problems for their security, a difficulty that quantum computers could overcome, leading to "harvest now, decrypt later" scenarios where encrypted data is collected today for future decryption. KT's "E2E Quantum Security" strategy aims to implement quantum security technologies across the entire communication network. This includes not only data transmission pathways but also critical infrastructure such as network equipment, AI data centers, and cloud systems. The core principle is to ensure comprehensive protection for data throughout its lifecycle – from generation, movement, and storage to usage and deletion – rather than focusing on isolated security points. The discussions at the conference also encompassed other critical security areas, including vulnerabilities in 5G and LTE mobile communications, security issues in device configuration and wireless protocols, the adoption of zero-trust security models, and the broader security strategies of telecommunications operators in the AI era. This holistic approach reflects KT's commitment to proactive security measures in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
