New Report: Pedagogy and Teacher Training Outweigh AI Tech in Education Impact

A new report from Futuresource Consulting, released today, sheds light on the true drivers of successful AI integration in K-12 education, suggesting that the focus should extend beyond just the technology itself. The study, which surveyed 1,660 teachers of 5-18 year olds across ten different countries, concludes that elements like sound pedagogy, thorough teacher training, adequate infrastructure, and effective governance frameworks are more critical to improving learning outcomes than the mere deployment of AI tools. The findings indicate a significant disconnect between the widespread adoption of AI in schools and its tangible, highly positive impact. While a notable 50 percent of teachers observed some positive effects on student learning, a much smaller proportion—just 13 percent—characterized AI's influence as "very positive." This suggests that simply introducing AI into classrooms does not automatically translate into profound educational benefits. One of the most compelling insights from the report concerns teacher capability. The research reveals a stark difference in outcomes: approximately 75 percent of teachers who felt adequately trained in AI reported positive impacts on teaching and learning, compared to a mere 38 percent of those with little to no training. Alarmingly, over a quarter of all teachers surveyed admitted to having received no AI-related training whatsoever. Claire Kerrison, principal analyst at Futuresource Consulting and the report's author, underscored this point, stating that "Our research shows that AI acts as an amplifier of existing teaching practice. It can strengthen great teaching, but it cannot compensate for weak implementation." The report also challenges another prevailing belief: that increased screen time is inherently detrimental to learning. Contrary to this assumption, teachers operating in 1:1 device environments were more than twice as likely to report substantial improvements in learning outcomes compared to their counterparts in classrooms where devices were shared among multiple students. This suggests that the context and pedagogical approach to device usage, rather than screen time itself, play a more significant role. For policymakers and EdTech suppliers, the message is clear: achieving meaningful, scalable impact with AI in education requires a holistic strategy. Investment must be directed not just into the technology, but crucially into empowering educators through comprehensive training, fostering innovative pedagogical approaches, building robust digital infrastructure, and establishing clear, supportive governance frameworks.
