SKT, NTT, and Chunghwa Telecom Launch $500M AI Investment Fund

In a significant move to accelerate the development and adoption of cutting-edge artificial intelligence, South Korea's SK Telecom, Japan's NTT, and Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom have announced the formation of a joint AI investment fund. The fund, dubbed the "IOWN AI Fund," is capitalized at approximately $500 million, equivalent to 760 billion Korean Won, and represents a concerted effort by these major telecommunications players to pool resources and expertise in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. The primary objective of this newly established fund is to strategically invest in next-generation AI technologies. Key areas of focus include the crucial components of the AI ecosystem: AI data center infrastructure, AI semiconductors, and advanced optical communications. This targeted investment strategy reflects a recognition of the foundational elements required to support increasingly complex and demanding AI workloads. To manage this substantial investment, the three companies plan to establish a new fund management firm named Catalight Capital. This firm will operate from strategic locations in both Silicon Valley and East Asia, aiming to create a global network that connects the technological capabilities of East Asian countries with the broader international innovation ecosystem. The collaboration is expected to foster advancements in areas such as low-power, photonics-based data transport, which is central to NTT's Innovative Optical and Wireless Network (IOWN) concept, and thermal management solutions for AI infrastructure. The initiative underscores a growing trend of major corporations, particularly in the telecommunications sector, directly investing in the AI supply chain to secure future capabilities and drive innovation. By focusing on infrastructure and semiconductors, the fund aims to address bottlenecks and enhance the efficiency of AI development and deployment. This joint venture is poised to play a vital role in shaping the future of AI by backing startups and technologies that can deliver significant impact across various industries.
