Samsung Electronics Expands AI Semiconductor Ecosystem, Unveils 2nm Foundry Strategy
Samsung Electronics recently unveiled its ambitious strategy for the AI semiconductor ecosystem and its advanced 2-nanometer foundry roadmap at the SAFE (Samsung Advanced Foundry Ecosystem) Forum 2026, held in Seoul. The event served as a platform to gather more than 400 customers and partners from across the semiconductor design and manufacturing sectors, highlighting Samsung's commitment to fostering a robust collaborative environment.
The core of Samsung's updated vision is to evolve beyond being a traditional foundry manufacturer. The company aims to transform into a comprehensive "AI semiconductor platform provider," integrating its manufacturing prowess with advanced design optimization techniques and extensive ecosystem collaboration. This strategic shift is designed to better serve the rapidly expanding demands of the artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) markets.
Shin Jong-shin, Executive Vice President of Samsung Foundry's Design Platform Development Team, delivered a keynote address emphasizing the importance of strengthening cooperation with global AI and HPC customers. He also underscored Samsung's intent to expand the SAFE program as a pivotal hub for semiconductor industry collaboration, thereby enhancing its role in driving South Korea's system semiconductor ecosystem.
Technologically, Samsung presented significant advancements, including efforts to refine design technology co-optimization (DTCO) and accelerate the development of its cutting-edge 2-nanometer process node. These innovations are geared towards optimizing semiconductor performance specifically for AI workloads, while simultaneously boosting power efficiency and offering greater design flexibility to its clientele. A particular highlight was the emphasis on high-speed SRAM (Static Random-Access Memory) technology, which is becoming increasingly critical for achieving superior performance in modern AI chips.
