China Dominates Humanoid Robot Production Amidst Demand Challenges
China has emerged as a global leader in the production of humanoid robots, with Chinese startups reportedly responsible for roughly 85% of worldwide shipments in the past year. This surge is significantly bolstered by extensive state support, aligning with the Communist Party's 2026-2030 five-year plan to advance technological frontiers, including humanoid robotics.
Companies such as Shanghai-based Matrix Robotics are at the forefront, developing AI-powered humanoids like the "MATRIX-3," which stands nearly 5.6 feet tall and is capable of precise movements. Matrix Robotics has secured around 1,000 orders from diverse sectors, including coffee chains and hotels, demonstrating a growing, albeit nascent, market. Other major players like AGIBOT and Unitree also shipped thousands of units in 2025, far outstripping their U.S. counterparts.
While robot makers anticipate further cost reductions as production scales, with some Chinese models already 20% cheaper than foreign alternatives, the widespread deployment of these robots faces hurdles. Morgan Stanley projects the average price could drop significantly by 2050, but current costs remain a barrier for many potential buyers. Experts note that many humanoid robots are still more performative than truly functional in complex, unpredictable environments, suggesting that demand may not yet fully match the rapid increase in manufacturing capacity.
