AWS Benchmarks 71,000 Accounts: Rightsizing Before Commitments Unlocks 4x Faster Efficiency Gains

AWS has published findings from a comprehensive analysis of optimization patterns across more than 71,000 opted-in customer accounts, offering an empirical look into cloud efficiency metrics. The report reveals a median Cost Efficiency score of 83 across AWS accounts, with a mean of 79. Crucially, while 47.1% of organizations with Savings Plans actively pursue rightsizing, those pairing workload rightsizing with commitment purchases upgrade 60% more instances to modern hardware and improve overall efficiency four times faster than commitment-only users. Additionally, enabling EC2 memory metrics delivers 8 to 30 percentage points higher savings per recommendation, yet only 17.7% of eligible customers have activated this telemetry. Teams should immediately configure the CloudWatch agent to report memory utilization on EC2 fleets, unlocking significantly higher precision in Compute Optimizer recommendations.
