Dell Enhances Server Automation with New OpenManage Ansible Modules

Dell has rolled out significant enhancements to its OpenManage Ansible Modules, making them readily available as a certified Ansible Collection on Ansible Galaxy. This integration ensures that the modules are compatible with Ansible community major release v3.0.0 and subsequent versions, providing a robust framework for automating Dell PowerEdge servers and modular infrastructure. The primary goal of these modules is to simplify and accelerate IT operations by leveraging the agentless management capabilities embedded within Dell's hardware, specifically the Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller (iDRAC), Dell OpenManage Enterprise-Modular, and Dell OpenManage Enterprise. Administrators can now utilize Ansible playbooks for a wide array of tasks, from initial provisioning to ongoing deployment and updates. The modules offer granular control over various aspects of server management. For instance, in Smart Fabric management, users can configure network VLANs, create, modify, and delete fabrics and uplinks, and manage port breakouts for fabric configurations. This level of detail allows for precise network orchestration directly through Ansible. Beyond network management, the modules extend to comprehensive iDRAC configuration. This includes user and password administration, allowing for the creation, modification, or deletion of local user settings. BIOS configurations can be managed using a single task to set all attributes, including boot order and one-time boot settings. Storage configuration is also streamlined, enabling the creation, modification, or deletion of multiple RAID volumes on direct-attached storage. Furthermore, the modules support OS deployment by allowing administrators to deploy operating system ISOs from remote network shares. A notable feature is the template-based server deployment, which facilitates capturing reference deployment templates from a 'golden server' and applying them to target servers. This ensures consistent and repeatable configurations across the infrastructure. These templates can also be edited to meet desired server configuration end states and can include OS image deployment as part of a single task. The overall aim is to provide a zero-touch automated end-to-end configuration, provisioning, deployment, and update process for PowerEdge servers, enhancing efficiency and reducing manual errors in data center management.
