Japanese Railway Companies Implement AI Safety Systems at Level Crossings

A growing number of Japanese railway companies are integrating artificial intelligence (AI) systems to bolster safety measures at level crossings, aiming to prevent accidents involving trains. These advanced systems are designed to automatically identify and report unusual occurrences, such as vehicles that have become stuck or people who are present on the tracks. This immediate detection capability allows for a quicker reaction time from train operators and railway personnel, which is crucial in preventing potential collisions. The Japanese government is actively promoting the adoption of these AI-based safety solutions by offering financial assistance to railway operators. This support is intended to accelerate the deployment of such technologies across the country's extensive rail network. Several prominent railway companies are already at the forefront of this technological shift. Kintetsu Railway, based in Osaka, has been trialing an AI-equipped camera system at a crossing on its Kyoto Line. During tests, the system successfully identified individuals on the tracks, visually marking them with an elliptical shape in the video footage. A review of approximately 80 days of data from this trial revealed seven instances where people were temporarily unable to exit the crossing promptly. A company official highlighted that such dangerous situations, if accumulated, could lead to severe accidents, expressing hope that the system would eliminate even a single hazard. Similarly, Nagoya Railroad has implemented a comparable AI-supported detection system at around 50 of its crossings. To manage implementation costs effectively, many companies, including Nagoya Railroad, plan to integrate these new AI capabilities with their existing surveillance camera infrastructure. The urgency for these safety improvements is underscored by statistics from the transport ministry, which indicate that Japan experiences approximately 200 railway crossing accidents annually, resulting in about 100 fatalities each year. A significant portion of these incidents involves elderly individuals who may become trapped due to reduced mobility or cognitive decline. In response to this ongoing challenge, the ministry launched a subsidy program in the current fiscal year to encourage railway operators to invest in AI-based safety systems. A ministry official emphasized the commitment to promoting any measures that contribute to accident prevention.
