OpenTelemetry and Prometheus Interoperability Reaches New Heights, Survey Reveals

A recent survey conducted by members of the OpenTelemetry community reveals a notable improvement in the interoperability between OpenTelemetry and Prometheus for metrics. The survey, which gathered data from active OpenTelemetry users with Prometheus-adjacent backends, indicates that the average ease-of-use rating for combining these technologies has risen from 3.1 to 3.6 since 2024. Crucially, the percentage of respondents finding the two hard to use together dropped significantly from 29% to 10%. This development is highly significant for practitioners in the cloud-native and DevOps space. It signals a maturing observability ecosystem where integrating best-of-breed tools like OpenTelemetry and Prometheus is becoming less of a challenge. For teams already invested in Prometheus, this means they can gradually adopt OpenTelemetry for application instrumentation without a disruptive rip-and-replace strategy. Conversely, those embracing OpenTelemetry can still leverage existing Prometheus exporters for infrastructure monitoring. The reduced friction translates directly into more efficient operations and a lower barrier to achieving comprehensive observability. This trend aligns with the broader movement towards vendor-neutral, open-standard observability. OpenTelemetry, as a Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) graduated project, aims to provide a universal standard for telemetry data. The improved interoperability with Prometheus, a de facto standard for metrics collection in Kubernetes environments, reinforces this vision. It acknowledges the reality of diverse technology stacks and promotes a pragmatic approach to observability rather than forcing monolithic solutions. The survey also highlighted that nearly half of respondents run both Prometheus exporters and OpenTelemetry receivers concurrently, indicating a preference for hybrid models. In practice, this means teams should continue to evaluate how OpenTelemetry can complement their existing Prometheus setups. It encourages a strategy of incremental adoption, where OpenTelemetry SDKs can be introduced for new application development while existing infrastructure continues to be monitored via Prometheus exporters. Practitioners should pay attention to the OpenTelemetry Collector, which plays a pivotal role in processing and routing telemetry from both sources. The survey found that the OpenTelemetry Collector is one of the most common processing steps, used by 53% of respondents. This flexibility allows for a more unified approach to telemetry data, ultimately leading to better insights and faster incident resolution without requiring a complete overhaul of existing systems.
