AWS Launches Local Zone in Hanoi, Vietnam, Bolstering Cloud Migration and Data Residency

The Amazon Web Services (AWS) Local Zone has officially launched in Hanoi, Vietnam, marking a significant infrastructure investment in the region on June 19, 2026. This new Local Zone brings AWS-managed cloud infrastructure directly to organizations operating within Vietnam, catering to diverse sectors such as healthcare, finance, and gaming. The primary objective of this expansion is to facilitate local data storage and processing, which is increasingly vital for businesses needing to comply with specific data residency requirements. Furthermore, the Hanoi Local Zone is engineered to deliver low-latency performance, a critical factor for applications and services that demand rapid response times. By bringing cloud resources closer to end-users, AWS aims to reduce the necessity for organizations to build and maintain their own on-premises infrastructure, thereby streamlining operations and potentially lowering operational costs. A key aspect of this launch is its direct support for enterprise cloud migration scenarios. This includes facilitating VMware workload migration, allowing businesses to move their existing virtualized environments to the AWS cloud with greater ease. It also plays a pivotal role in hybrid cloud modernization strategies, enabling a seamless integration between on-premises infrastructure and the AWS global network. The Local Zone offers enhanced capabilities for data residency and compliance, particularly for sensitive data. For instance, telecommunications companies can process subscriber data locally, aiding in their data localization compliance efforts. Healthcare providers can leverage these local capabilities to process medical imaging and patient data, supporting improved patient care while addressing data residency considerations. Technically, the Hanoi Local Zone is one of the first AWS Local Zones to offer Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) One Zone-Infrequent Access storage class (S3 One Zone-IA) and Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) Local Snapshots. These features provide customers with local object storage and snapshot functionalities, further reinforcing the ability to meet stringent data residency demands. Customers also gain access to Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instance types, allowing them to run demanding applications with high performance. This strategic investment by AWS underscores Vietnam's growing importance as a digital hub in Asia, providing robust local cloud capabilities that are expected to attract further global business investment into the country.
