Azure Translator Integrates LLMs like GPT-5.1 for Enhanced Translation Capabilities

Microsoft Azure has rolled out a substantial enhancement to its Translator service within Foundry Tools, marking a new era for multilingual communication. The latest General Availability (GA) release, effective June 6, 2026, introduces the groundbreaking capability for users to opt for Large Language Models (LLMs), including advanced models like GPT-5.1, to power their translation needs. This strategic integration moves beyond the conventional Neural Machine Translation (NMT) technology, offering a more sophisticated and adaptable approach to language translation. The update provides developers and organizations with unprecedented flexibility. Previously, Azure Translator relied solely on NMT. Now, users can select between the established NMT and the newly integrated LLM technology, allowing them to choose the best fit based on factors such as desired quality, cost considerations, and specific application requirements. Beyond the core LLM integration, the new release brings several advanced features designed to refine translation outputs. Adaptive custom translation is a key highlight, enabling LLM models to perform few-shot translations by incorporating up to five reference translations or adaptive dataset index IDs. This functionality ensures that translations align more closely with specific styles and user-defined needs. Furthermore, the updated Azure Translator now supports tone variant translations, allowing text to be translated across multiple tonal categories such as formal, informal, and neutral. This ensures precise contextual adaptation, which is crucial for maintaining the intended message and nuance in different communication scenarios. Gender-specific language translations are also part of this release, addressing a critical aspect of linguistic accuracy and inclusivity. The technical underpinnings of this release include a revised REST API structure, with specific key names for request and response arrays to streamline integration.
