AWS and Azure Launch Managed Multicloud Interconnect to Eliminate Cross-Cloud Networking Friction

Microsoft and Amazon Web Services have released a public preview of a native cross-cloud networking capability that links Microsoft Azure and AWS environments through private, fully managed infrastructure. Built on open API specifications for network interoperability, the solution combines Azure Multicloud Interconnect and AWS Interconnect – multicloud. The service replaces traditional colocation bridges and manual circuit stitching by allowing engineers to provision private, MACsec-encrypted connections directly between Azure Virtual Networks and AWS Virtual Private Clouds through their management consoles. While the preview offers bandwidth capped at 1 Gbps across select regions in North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific, general availability targets up to 100 Gbps with 99.99% availability. For enterprise platform teams, multi-cloud operations have historically faltered at the networking layer. Establishing a private link between Azure ExpressRoute and AWS Direct Connect historically demanded third-party carrier negotiations, custom routing appliances, complex BGP route tables, and ongoing telemetry synchronization—often taking months to deploy. This joint managed offering shifts cross-cloud connectivity from an arduous physical infrastructure project into a declarative software resource. Data engineering teams running analytics engines in one provider and front-end workloads or generative AI agents in another can now exchange high-throughput traffic without routing over the public internet or babysitting bespoke transit hubs. This bilateral integration represents a critical inflection point in the maturation of multi-cloud architectures. Previously, hyperscalers treated multi-cloud connectivity as an edge case, but competitive pressures and enterprise demand for best-of-breed AI platforms have forced convergence around common interoperability standards. AWS previously established similar direct interconnects with Google Cloud and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure using standardized open specifications. The inclusion of Azure finalizes interconnectivity across all three major public cloud providers, establishing private cross-cloud fabrics as a standardized foundational layer of modern cloud computing rather than an enterprise anti-pattern. Practitioners should evaluate this managed interconnect for latency-sensitive cross-cloud architectures, but keep key trade-offs in mind. The current preview is limited to 1 Gbps and lacks formal SLAs, making it ideal for proof-of-concept AI pipelines, disaster recovery replicas, and telemetry aggregation rather than immediate multi-gigabit production migrations. Furthermore, simplifying the wire does not eliminate multi-cloud operational challenges: network engineers must still manage non-overlapping CIDR IP spaces, route advertisements, and disparate IAM and policy boundaries across clouds. Teams should begin testing preview peering in supported regions to baseline cross-cloud latency and prepare infrastructure-as-code definitions for general availability.
