Equinix, AWS, and Google Cloud Launch Fabric One for Intent-Based Multi-Cloud Networking
At its inaugural Horizon event, Equinix unveiled Equinix Fabric One, an automated, managed any-to-any connectivity service engineered to interconnect distributed cloud environments, on-premises data centers, and AI infrastructure. Developing the service in close collaboration with lead integration partners Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud, Equinix anchored Fabric One on the OpenAPI 3.0 Interconnect specification. The service allows engineering teams to define connectivity intents via web interfaces, APIs, automated workflows, or agentic commands, while the underlying platform orchestrates routing, cloud connectivity, encryption, resiliency, and failover across providers. Beta access begins later this year, with general availability slated for 2027 starting in North America.
As modern enterprise architectures shift toward multi-model and agentic AI systems, workloads increasingly span fragmented footprints: foundation models hosted across specialized neoclouds, proprietary corporate data stores housed in private facilities, and analytical pipelines executing across major hyperscalers. Historically, cloud and network architects had to negotiate separate direct connects, reconcile overlapping CIDR blocks, configure bespoke IPsec overlays, and maintain disparate BGP route filtering for every individual cloud boundary. This point-to-point approach introduces severe operational drag, high configuration overhead, and latency unpredictability that stalls workload deployment. Fabric One abstracts that underlying transport complexity into a unified control layer, reducing Day-2 multi-cloud networking management overhead significantly.
This announcement reflects a maturing paradigm in cloud networking, transitioning from manual software-defined WAN (SD-WAN) overlays toward standardized cross-cloud native fabrics. Joint initiatives like the OpenAPI 3.0 Interconnect specification and Google Cloud’s Cross-Cloud Network reflect a broader realization among hyperscalers: seamless cross-provider interoperability is now a prerequisite for capturing enterprise AI workloads. Rather than attempting to lock workloads exclusively within single-vendor ecosystems, hyperscalers are partnering with neutral digital infrastructure providers to offer standard programmatic hooks, ensuring that high-throughput, latency-sensitive traffic flows reliably across heterogeneous cloud boundaries.
For DevOps and platform engineers, the transition to intent-based networking across hybrid topologies requires re-evaluating infrastructure-as-code (IaC) and network automation pipelines. Instead of maintaining brittle Terraform modules for cloud interconnects and virtual private gateways, platform teams should begin exploring declarative interconnect APIs that allow workloads and AI agents to dynamically request bandwidth and routing paths. However, practitioners must carefully evaluate the operational trade-offs: delegating routing and failover orchestration to a managed third-party fabric shifts internal engineering focus toward observability, SLA verification, and cost governance around cross-cloud data egress rates.
