NBN Co And Ericsson Achieve Australia-First AI-Driven Network Autonomy Validation

NBN Co, Australia's national broadband network provider, has partnered with Ericsson to achieve a groundbreaking Level 4 Autonomy validation for Service Assurance from the TM Forum. This marks Australia's first such achievement in AI-driven network autonomy, focusing on enhancing the performance of NBN's Fixed Wireless network. The validated system employs an advanced AI agent designed to proactively manage network conditions, particularly atmospheric ducting events. Atmospheric ducting is a weather phenomenon that can severely interfere with fixed wireless signal performance, leading to service degradation, especially across Australia's vast regional footprint. The newly validated AI-enabled capability allows the network to detect these events in real-time and automatically implement corrective actions without human intervention. This autonomous response is crucial for maintaining consistent network quality for the 800,000 homes and businesses that rely on the nbn Fixed Wireless network. The system's functionality extends beyond simple detection. It translates service intents into executable task orders, performs continuous real-time monitoring, and uses AI-based prediction to anticipate potential degradation. It then analyzes service impact, isolates root causes across different network domains, and generates, evaluates, and executes mitigation actions autonomously. A key feature is the inclusion of automated fallback and rollback functions, ensuring that any corrective actions can be reversed if they do not yield the intended outcome, thereby safeguarding network stability. Under the TM Forum's Autonomous Network Level Assessment Validation (ANLAV) program, all eight capability areas of the solution were confirmed at the highest option, leading to the Level 4.0 validation. This signifies a system capable of independent operation, self-optimization, and proactive issue resolution within defined scenarios. Guy Scott, Chief Technology Officer at NBN Co, highlighted this achievement as a pivotal step towards autonomous network management, enabling the network to intelligently detect, decide, and act in real-time. Ericsson's contribution to this initiative leverages its AI Intent-based Operations (IBO) powered Autonomous Network Operations solution, which is part of the Ericsson Operations Engine. This solution is instrumental in autonomously detecting atmospheric ducting conditions, modeling their impact, and executing real-time optimization to preserve service quality for end-users. The ultimate goal is to reduce the frequency and duration of weather-related performance impacts, delivering a more reliable and resilient broadband experience for regional Australian customers.
