KT Pioneers Public Sector 5G Business Network with Enhanced Security in Gyeonggi Province
South Korean telecommunications giant KT has achieved a significant milestone by deploying the first hub-based 5G business network within the public sector. The Gyeonggi Provincial Office is the initial beneficiary of this advanced system, which represents a paradigm shift from conventional wired network infrastructure.
The core objective of this deployment is to establish a security-enhanced 5G wireless network that facilitates a more agile and intelligent working environment for public employees. This allows for greater flexibility, enabling staff to perform their duties without being constrained by physical location or rigid schedules.
Historically, various government agencies and local authorities requiring network security approvals had to develop and maintain their own separate, often redundant, network systems. KT's new hub-based approach streamlines this process by integrating these approvals and infrastructure at regional hubs. This allows multiple affiliated local governments and institutions, such as Suwon, Paju, and Uijeongbu, to share a unified and secure network.
KT has installed the crucial GMG equipment, which forms the backbone of the 5G business network, at the Gyeonggi Provincial Office's data center. This centralized setup not only enhances overall network security but also promises to improve operational efficiency and resource utilization across the participating public entities.
Looking ahead, KT plans to further develop back-office functionalities to enable distinct authority separation between higher-level organizations and their affiliates. This will ensure both independent operation capabilities for clients and continued infrastructure efficiency. According to Jeon Myung-jun, executive vice president at KT, this hub-based 5G business network model offers a versatile solution for any customer group that shares internal infrastructure, including regional local governments and other public institutions. KT aims to be a proactive enabler of digital transformation for public sector clients through diverse platform services.
