Toku Launches Kawa: Sovereign Open-Source Conversational AI for APAC
Toku, a prominent AI-powered 360° customer experience platform operating across the Asia Pacific region, announced today the public availability of Makimoto Kawa, or simply "Kawa." This launch marks a significant milestone as it represents Toku's inaugural public release of sovereign conversational AI infrastructure, developed and hosted within Singapore. The initiative directly fulfills commitments made by the company during its initial announcement in April 2026.
Kawa is specifically engineered to address the growing demand from enterprises and regulated industries for AI infrastructure that offers enhanced control over data processing, workload execution, and compliance with regional regulatory frameworks, particularly within APAC. By establishing a Singapore-based architecture, Toku aims to provide a foundational model for future deployments in other markets with similar data residency and compliance needs. This focus on "sovereign AI" ensures that data remains within specified geographical boundaries, a critical factor for many organizations.
At its launch, Kawa offers a post-conversation transcription API. This API is designed for processing recorded calls, voicemails, and facilitating large-scale analysis of archived customer interactions. Developers can submit audio recordings to the API and subsequently retrieve detailed transcripts, which include speaker separation and segment-level timestamps. This initial offering is a crucial step in Toku's broader strategy to deepen its AI capabilities and foster long-term innovation within its customer experience platform, complementing its existing offerings.
The platform's open-source nature, particularly its open orchestration layer, allows for inspection, configuration, and future extensibility, encouraging greater community participation and modification. Toku plans to progressively open additional layers of the pipeline through subsequent releases planned for the remainder of 2026. This approach of combining open-source development with enterprise-grade deployment underscores Toku's vision for a robust and adaptable AI ecosystem that empowers developers while meeting enterprise-grade requirements.
