UK Launches Two New £60 Million AI Research Labs to Boost Open-Source and Efficient AI

The United Kingdom has announced a significant investment of up to £60 million to establish two cutting-edge artificial intelligence research laboratories, aiming to propel the nation to the forefront of global AI innovation. This initiative, funded by UK Research and Innovation's (UKRI) Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), seeks to foster the development of more accessible, efficient, and open-source AI technologies, thereby reducing dependence on existing large technology providers. The first of these new facilities is the Science of Fundamental AI Research (SOFAIR) Lab, spearheaded by University College London (UCL) in collaboration with the Universities of Cambridge, Oxford, and Edinburgh. The SOFAIR Lab's primary objective is to develop next-generation open-source AI systems that can operate effectively on widely available hardware. This approach directly addresses the current reliance on a few dominant AI architectures that demand extensive computing infrastructure. By exploring novel AI architectures and designs, SOFAIR aims to make advanced AI tools more affordable and broadly accessible, benefiting researchers and institutions alike. Professor David Barber from UCL will lead this lab, bringing together experts from computer science, mathematics, statistics, and neuroscience to rethink how AI systems are designed and how they learn. The second institution, the British Open-ended Learning and Discovery (BOLD) Lab, will be hosted by the University of Oxford, with contributions from UCL and Imperial College London. Under the leadership of Professor Jakob Foerster, the BOLD Lab will focus on fundamentally rethinking how AI learns from its environment. Its research will concentrate on creating AI systems that can learn more efficiently, adapt to new and dynamic situations, and navigate complex physical spaces. The emphasis here is on developing practical, human-centered AI that can be readily applied across various sectors, including healthcare, education, transport, and public services, facilitating wider adoption throughout the economy. Both labs are committed to fostering entrepreneurship and supporting spin-out companies, ensuring that fundamental research breakthroughs are translated into real-world impact and commercial applications. The investment also includes £2 million per lab specifically for hiring doctoral students, aiming to cultivate the next generation of AI talent in the UK. This strategic funding is part of the broader UKRI AI Strategy, a £1.6 billion plan designed to strengthen the UK's leadership in AI over the next four years. By promoting open-source development and diversifying AI's underlying technology, the UK aims to enhance its sovereign capability in AI and ensure that academic research plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of the field.
