Spacelift Survey: 93% of Organizations Have Experienced AI-Caused Infrastructure Incidents as 'Vibe Coding' Spreads to Infrastructure
The 2026 State of Infrastructure Automation report, conducted by Spacelift, unveils a concerning trend: a significant "AI-infrastructure gap" is emerging within organizations. The survey, which polled 406 IT decision-makers and platform engineering leaders, found that a staggering 93% of organizations have experienced at least one AI-caused infrastructure incident in the last year. These incidents range from security misconfigurations and compliance violations to unplanned operational disruptions, highlighting the challenges of integrating AI into infrastructure management.
The core issue identified is that the rapid acceleration of development due to AI is outpacing the ability of infrastructure teams to govern these changes effectively. While AI-assisted coding has become commonplace, enabling developers to move from idea to code at unprecedented speeds, the underlying infrastructure and governance frameworks have not kept pace. This creates a disconnect where AI-generated infrastructure code is often deployed with insufficient review or oversight, leading to increased risk.
Despite the high incidence of problems, the survey also revealed a "governance paradox." Many organizations express confidence in their AI governance capabilities, yet only a small fraction (19%) have established the necessary foundational governance frameworks for AI readiness. This disparity suggests a lack of awareness or underestimation of the complexities involved in managing AI-driven infrastructure. The report introduces an AI Maturity Index (AIMI) to categorize organizations based on their readiness, indicating that a large majority are still in the "Fragmented" or "Exposed" stages, lacking robust governance.
Platform engineering is presented as a crucial solution to mitigate this growing risk. Experts cited in the report emphasize that platform engineering teams are uniquely positioned to introduce the necessary compliance and safety measures for infrastructure generated by AI. By establishing controlled pipelines, automated validation, and clear guardrails, platform teams can ensure that AI-driven productivity gains do not come at the cost of increased operational risk. The report advocates for prioritizing Infrastructure as Code (IaC) coverage and building agentic governance frameworks before AI workflows go live, thereby closing the gap between rapid AI adoption and robust infrastructure governance.
