Azure Virtual Network Manager Simplifies Virtual WAN Spoke Connectivity at Scale
Microsoft has rolled out a key enhancement for Azure networking, integrating Azure Virtual Network Manager (AVNM) with Virtual WAN to streamline spoke connectivity and policy management in extensive hub-and-spoke network architectures. This integration is particularly beneficial for organizations leveraging Virtual WAN for transitive connectivity across their cloud infrastructure.
The core benefit of this new capability is the ability to designate a Virtual WAN hub as the central hub within an AVNM hub-and-spoke topology. This allows network administrators to define connectivity and routing intents just once at the network group level. These policies are then consistently applied across a large number of spoke Virtual Networks (VNets), dramatically cutting down on the manual, repetitive configuration tasks traditionally associated with managing individual spoke connections and routing tables.
This centralized, group-based orchestration provided by AVNM, combined with Virtual WAN's managed routing, security integration, and hybrid connectivity features, offers a more efficient and scalable approach to network management. It helps maintain operational consistency even as cloud deployments grow in complexity and size. Furthermore, the integration supports direct VNet-to-VNet connectivity within a defined spoke network group. This is a crucial feature for latency-sensitive or high-throughput east-west workloads, as it allows traffic to route directly between virtual networks, bypassing the Virtual WAN hub. This direct connectivity can be configured regionally or extended globally across Azure regions.
Key use cases include connecting numerous virtual networks to a Virtual WAN hub in a single operation, with AVNM orchestrating all connections in parallel and automatically applying predefined routing configurations. Azure Policy can also be leveraged to define conditions for network group membership, ensuring that new virtual networks matching these conditions are automatically added and configured correctly, further reducing manual onboarding efforts and enhancing automation in network governance.
