Amazon and Telangana Partner to Launch AI Education in State Schools

In a significant move to advance digital literacy, Amazon has announced a partnership with the School Education department of Telangana, India, to roll out an artificial intelligence (AI) education program across government schools. This ambitious initiative is projected to reach about one million students every year, embedding AI learning directly into the academic framework. The program, spearheaded through Amazon's 'Future Engineer' (AFE) initiative, will introduce a structured AI curriculum specifically designed for students in Classes 6 to 9. This makes Telangana one of the pioneering states in India to integrate AI education into its school system on such a broad scale. The curriculum itself is a collaborative effort, developed by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) and supported by the non-profit Pi Jam Foundation. Students will access this learning through the foundation's CodeMitra EdTech platform. Under the new curriculum, students will engage in 25 hours of dedicated AI learning annually. The content will cover fundamental concepts such as computational thinking, decision-making systems, and practical, real-world applications of AI. The primary goal is to equip students with critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, alongside a foundational understanding of how AI technologies function. To ensure the successful implementation of this extensive program, the state government has undertaken substantial preparatory measures. Over 28,000 teachers have received specialized training to effectively deliver the new AI curriculum. Furthermore, efforts have been made to enhance classroom infrastructure, including the provision of refurbished laptops, to facilitate interactive learning experiences across government schools. Samir Kumar, Country Manager for Amazon India, highlighted that this collaboration underscores Amazon's commitment to democratizing AI literacy, particularly among underserved student populations. He stated that Amazon aims to extend its reach to four million government school students across India by 2030 through various initiatives, including curriculum integration, comprehensive teacher training, hands-on learning opportunities, and career awareness programs.
