China Accelerates AI Integration and Innovation in Energy Sector

China is making significant strides in embedding artificial intelligence into its energy sector, a strategic move designed to propel industrial modernization, optimize operational workflows, and secure the nation's energy future. This initiative is underpinned by an ambitious action plan recently issued by the National Energy Administration. The plan sets clear objectives for the coming years, including a substantial increase in the clean energy capacity dedicated to powering AI computing infrastructure by 2030. Concurrently, the administration aims for a considerable enhancement in the application of AI technologies throughout the energy sector. A key focus of this strategy is to cultivate high-value application scenarios for AI, unlocking the full potential of energy data. Furthermore, there is a strong emphasis on strengthening AI model innovation specifically tailored for the energy field. This includes developing advanced models for tasks such as optimizing energy grids, predicting demand, and improving resource extraction efficiency. The integration of AI has already demonstrated tangible benefits, such as drastically reducing the processing cycle for 3D acoustic wave inversion in oil and gas exploration from 20 days to just three, while cutting costs by over 30 percent. Additionally, AI models are being deployed in drilling risk warning systems, achieving over 85 percent accuracy and issuing hundreds of early warnings to prevent accidents. These advancements highlight the transformative impact of AI on critical energy operations.
