Choosing the Right AWS Migration Strategy: Lift and Shift vs. Re-Architect

Cloud migration is a complex undertaking that demands a nuanced approach, moving beyond simplistic, one-size-fits-all strategies. According to Critical Cloud, the most significant migration error is applying a single strategy to an entire project rather than assessing each workload individually. Broad declarations like "we're lifting and shifting everything" or "we're going cloud-native" often reflect budgetary or timeline constraints rather than sound technical decisions. The appropriate migration strategy for any given workload hinges on several factors: its specific function, its expected operational lifespan, and the tangible benefits derived from changing its underlying architecture. For instance, re-architecting a system slated for replacement within 18 months is inefficient; a rehost to clear data center obligations followed by decommissioning is more practical. While "lift and shift" (rehosting) offers speed, it often means moving existing problems to a more expensive environment without fully leveraging cloud advantages like managed services or native security controls. Conversely, re-architecting, though offering high long-term payoff, is expensive, slow, and inherently risky, diverting engineering effort from new product development. A middle ground, replatforming, often yields the best return on investment. This involves targeted changes to utilize managed services—such as migrating from self-managed MySQL to Amazon RDS—without a complete architectural overhaul.
