Verizon and Ericsson have significantly broadened their strategic alliance, now offering private 5G edge networks to enterprises across the globe. This expanded partnership focuses on delivering localized edge computing capabilities and robust cloud orchestration, catering to the growing demands of multinational businesses. The core objective is to facilitate the international deployment of advanced robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) workloads, ensuring consistent governance and operational efficiency regardless of geographical location.
The technical foundation of this offering is Ericsson's Private 5G platform. This innovative solution involves installing a dual-mode 4G and 5G core directly within the enterprise's premises. This on-site infrastructure acts as a dedicated edge compute node, critically processing data locally at the source. This localized data processing is a key differentiator, as it effectively eliminates the latency typically associated with routing traffic through distant public carrier networks. The result is significantly improved responsiveness for critical applications.
Furthermore, the architecture inherently enhances security protocols. By keeping raw operational data on-premises, the external attack surface for sensitive information is substantially reduced. While authentication and role-based access control policies are managed in the cloud, they are seamlessly synchronized with existing enterprise identity providers to authorize devices seeking network access. The containerized edge microservices employed by Ericsson's private 5G server, running on commercial off-the-shelf hardware, ensure that the 5G core can receive software updates via the cloud without requiring network engineers to perform full system reboots. This microservices architecture allows Verizon's cloud platform to push targeted security patches and feature updates directly to specific edge nodes without disrupting local production traffic, ensuring continuous operation and up-to-date security.
