Alibaba Cloud Enhances Intelligent Advisor for Cost Optimization
Alibaba Cloud's Intelligent Advisor has rolled out significant enhancements to its "Special administration: Cost optimization" feature, providing users with a robust toolset to manage and reduce their cloud spending effectively. This update focuses on delivering actionable insights to identify potential savings across an organization's cloud infrastructure.
The core functionality allows users to initiate manual cost optimization checks. Upon activation, the system meticulously inspects the costs associated with specific cloud products within the user's account. A crucial aspect of this process involves pulling the bill from the previous calendar month. This historical data is then used to calculate the maximum estimated monthly savings that could be achieved through optimization. The system also identifies and quantifies the number of optimizable items and resources, giving users a clear picture of where efficiencies can be gained.
A key strength of the Intelligent Advisor's cost optimization feature lies in its configurability. Users are empowered to define and customize check item thresholds. For instance, within the "ECS Idle Resource Check," administrators can set specific time ranges and percentage thresholds for CPU and memory load. This granular control ensures that instances falling below these predefined utilization levels within the specified period are accurately identified as idle or underutilized, making them prime candidates for optimization. Furthermore, the tool provides the flexibility to exclude particular resources from these checks, accommodating unique operational requirements or critical workloads that should not be subject to automatic optimization recommendations.
Once a check is completed, the Intelligent Advisor presents detailed results, which can be viewed in various formats. The default "Check View" groups items with similar dimensions, such as "Idle Resources/Billing Method/Low Resource Utilization," offering a consolidated perspective on common cost drivers. Alternatively, users can switch to a "Product View," which categorizes check items by cloud product, enabling a product-centric analysis of spending. Each entry in the results list includes the check result, the specific rule that triggered the finding, and a clear optimization suggestion. This comprehensive reporting helps organizations understand not just *what* is costing them, but also *why* and *how* to address it.
The overall aim of these enhancements is to provide cloud professionals, FinOps teams, and IT managers with the necessary visibility and control to improve cost predictability, minimize operational waste, and establish sustainable cloud financial governance. By leveraging the Intelligent Advisor, businesses can make more informed decisions about their cloud resources, ensuring that spending aligns with business value and operational needs.
