Accelerate VMware Migration to AWS with Experience-Based Acceleration

AWS is rolling out its Experience-Based Acceleration (EBA) program, a strategic offering aimed at streamlining the often-complex process of migrating VMware environments to Amazon Web Services. This program is structured to rapidly move customers' VMware workloads to AWS through a highly focused, three-day workshop. The core idea behind EBA is to transform what typically takes several months into a concentrated, efficient effort, leveraging real-world application migration rather than simulations. Before the three-day workshop, a crucial four-week preparatory phase is undertaken. This involves comprehensive discovery, meticulous dependency mapping, and precise right-sizing of the workloads destined for migration. During this period, tools like AWS Transform are utilized for assessment, and AWS Application Migration Service handles the replication process. The actual migrated workloads are then hosted on Amazon EC2 instances. The workshop itself is designed for intense, hands-on activity. Participating teams work on migrating multiple applications, and over 20 engineers receive training. A key outcome of the workshop is the creation of reusable playbooks, which are instrumental for future migrations. Success factors for EBA include strong executive sponsorship, the presence of key stakeholders, clear decision-making frameworks, and a focused execution strategy. Organizations that have adopted EBA have reported that additional applications are moved into production within weeks, directly benefiting from the playbooks developed during the workshop. EBA's effectiveness stems from its ability to remove common migration bottlenecks, such as prolonged decision-making processes. It also builds practical capabilities within customer teams by engaging them directly with real migration tasks.
