SpaceX Lands US$30 Billion Google Deal to Power Gemini AI Models
In a major development for the artificial intelligence and cloud computing sectors, Google has finalized a substantial agreement with Elon Musk's SpaceX. The deal, valued at roughly US$30 billion over its three-year term, will see Google paying SpaceX approximately US$920 million per month for access to a vast array of Nvidia GPUs. This computing infrastructure is deemed essential for supporting and scaling Google's advanced Gemini AI models.
The agreement, which was revealed in SpaceX's initial public offering (IPO) filing, is set to bolster SpaceX's finances significantly ahead of its anticipated IPO on June 12. Payments from Google will commence with a reduced fee during a ramp-up period, transitioning to the full monthly rate by October 2026, and continuing through June 2029.
A Google Cloud spokesperson confirmed the short-term nature of the agreement, stating it provides "bridge capacity to meet surging customer demand for our agent platform, Gemini Enterprise, which has been even higher than we expected." This indicates Google's proactive approach to securing the necessary hardware resources to keep pace with the rapid adoption and expansion of its AI offerings. The filing also notes that either party can terminate the agreement with 90 days' notice after December 31, 2026.
This strategic partnership underscores the immense computational power required to develop and deploy cutting-edge AI technologies like Gemini. It also highlights SpaceX's emerging role beyond rocketry, leveraging its data center capabilities to become a significant player in the AI infrastructure landscape, similar to a prior deal with AI giant Anthropic.
