Ansible-Core Flaw Enables Arbitrary Code Execution via Malicious Roles
A significant security vulnerability, designated CVE-2026-11332, has been reported in `ansible-core`, posing a risk of arbitrary code execution. The vulnerability resides within the `ansible-galaxy role install` command, a common method for integrating community or internal roles into Ansible projects, and was identified by the Amazon Linux Security Center.
The core of the issue lies in how `ansible-core` processes dependency specifications found in a role's `meta/requirements.yml` file. A malicious actor can exploit an improper neutralization of argument delimiters by injecting arbitrary Git configuration flags into the `src` field of this file. For instance, specially crafted flags could instruct Git to execute a script during the cloning process, effectively bypassing intended security measures. When a user then attempts to install a role containing this crafted `meta/requirements.yml` via `ansible-galaxy role install`, the injected Git flags are processed, potentially leading to the execution of arbitrary code on the user's system.
This type of vulnerability is particularly concerning as it can allow an attacker to gain control over the system where Ansible is being run, potentially compromising sensitive data, installing malware, or further escalating privileges within an IT environment. The impact could be substantial for organizations that frequently integrate third-party Ansible roles from public repositories or have automated CI/CD systems that install roles without stringent validation and sandboxing. The agentless nature of Ansible, while a strength for simplicity, means that a compromised control node can have widespread effects across managed infrastructure.
