Trump administration clears Anthropic to roll out Claude Mythos 5 to over 100 organisations: Report

The U.S. Commerce Department has officially given Anthropic the green light to deploy its powerful artificial intelligence model, Claude Mythos 5, to more than 100 pre-approved organizations. This development comes after a two-week period during which access to the frontier AI model was restricted due to an export-control order issued on June 12. The initial directive had prompted Anthropic to disable access to both Mythos 5 and Fable 5, citing national security concerns, particularly the potential for misuse by foreign entities. According to a letter from Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to Anthropic's chief compute officer, Tom Brown, the decision to lift the block for certain partners was made because "appropriate safeguards are in place." Lutnick noted that Anthropic has engaged in intensive, daily discussions with the U.S. government and has made "significant progress" in addressing the risks associated with its advanced models. This collaboration has resulted in a permissions-based release model, which could become a standard for future frontier AI deployments. The approved list of organizations now permitted to access Claude Mythos 5 reportedly includes numerous Fortune 500 companies and some federal agencies. The new arrangement also clarifies that an export license will no longer be required for transferring the Claude Mythos 5 Model to these identified entities and their foreign national employees, or to Anthropic's own foreign national employees. However, restrictions will remain in place for companies not on the approved list, indicating a carefully managed rollout. While the immediate focus is on Mythos 5, the Commerce Department's letter remains silent on the status of Claude Fable 5. Reports suggest that discussions are ongoing regarding the potential release of Fable 5, but a timeline for its broader availability is not yet clear. This incident underscores the U.S. government's increasing role in regulating advanced AI models, balancing innovation with national security imperatives. The move also comes shortly after OpenAI reportedly received a similar directive to stagger the release of its GPT-5.6 model to government-approved partners, highlighting a broader trend in AI governance.
