AWS Launches Second-Generation Single-Rack Outposts for Dense Edge Deployments

AWS has announced the general availability of its second-generation single-rack AWS Outposts solution. The updated form factor packages compute, storage, and networking into a single, self-contained 42U rack engineered for deployment environments that lack the space or power budgets for multi-rack installations. The system delivers up to 2,688 vCPUs and 100 TB of Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) capacity, adding support for current-generation x86 EC2 instance families—including M7i/M8i general-purpose, C7i/C8i compute-optimized, and R7i/R8i memory-optimized instances—alongside Outposts accelerated networking. This release matters directly to platform architects and DevOps leads managing distributed environments such as retail hubs, manufacturing plants, telecommunications facilities, and regional healthcare centers. Historically, bringing cloud parity to space-limited edge locations required running fragmented, proprietary appliances or piecing together custom virtualization layers with third-party orchestration. By packaging high-density modern compute and EBS storage under native AWS API and IAM governance into a single rack, teams can deploy standardized Kubernetes workloads, data caching, and low-latency preprocessing pipelines without sacrificing operational tooling or re-architecting applications for heterogeneous infrastructure.
